Jesper Rasmussen
Jesper Rasmussen, født 1959, er en dansk billedkunstner, som siden begyndelsen af 1980erne har arbejdet med skulptur, installation, grafik, fotografi, publikationer og kunstnertekst. Det kunstneriske arbejde handler gerne om hvordan form skaber stemning, identitet og rammer for adfærd.
Centralt står Jesper Rasmussens arbejde med installation og fotografi, der kredser om rum, arkitektur og landskab. Det har givet sig udslag i skulpturelle telte, tegning af en domkirke i fuld størrelse, trappeskulpturer, arkitektoner og scenografiske kukkasseinstallationer man ikke kan komme ind i. Særligt betydningsfuld er den digitalt manipulerede fotografiske repræsentation af arkitektur og lokaliteter, hvor spor af menneskelig tilstedeværelse og aktivitet i form af trafik, døre, vinduer mm. er fjernet digitalt, så bygninger og pladser fremstår med en særegen og unheimlich stemning, og der opstår en parallelvirkelighed, der trods umenneskeliggørelsen netop peger på menneskets rolle og adfærd. Eller digitalt manipulerede fotografier af udstillingsrum på kunstmuseer, hvor kunsten er bortretoucheret, så den kun fornemmes som skygger, refleksioner eller visuelle spor i billedet, og den optræder som en slags fantom- eller spøgelseskunst.
Det skulpturelle arbejde drejer sig især om transformering af formalistiske arkitektoner til funktionelle konstruktioner, eller om installering af stedspecifikke og bygningsintegrerede skulptur- og arkitekturkonstruktioner, der gerne undersøger overgangen mellem æstetik og funktion. Jesper Rasmussen er særligt optaget af arkitektoner og andre formelle strukturer, hvor det er svært at afgøre, om de er skulpturer i deres egen ret eller modeller af arkitektur i en anden skala.
Jesper Rasmussen var i perioden 1986-91 medstifter og medlem af kunstnergruppen Solkorset hvor man eksperimenterede med kollektive arbejdsprocesser og udførte store, spektakulære ruminstallationer.
Gennem hele sit kunstneriske virke har Jesper Rasmussen siden 1981 udgivet og redigeret kunsttidsskriftet Pist Protta sammen med Åse Eg Jørgensen og Jesper Fabricius. Tidsskriftet betragtes som et kunstprojekt i sig selv, hvor der fra gang til gang eksperimenteres med form, indhold, layout og udtryk. Jesper Rasmussen har desuden udgivet en række publikationer i form af kunstnerbøger, fotobøger mm, samt opbygget en større tekstpraksis med kunstneriske essays og polemiske klummer i egne bogudgivelser, Pist Protta og andre tidsskrifter.
Jesper Rasmussen har en lang række solo- og gruppeudstillinger bag sig i Danmark og udlandet, og er repræsenteret på flere danske museer, bl.a. ARoS, Arken, Kunsten Aalborg, Den Nationale Fotosamling og Statens Museum for Kunst.
Jesper Rasmussen har været medlem af Akademiraadet (2002-08), medlem af Statens Kunstfonds Indkøbs- og Legatudvalg (2008-10) og rektor ved Det Jyske Kunstakademi, Århus (2007-15).
Jesper Rasmussen har modtaget Statens Kunstfond treårige stipendie, Carl Nielsen og Anne Marie Carl-Nielsens Legat, Eckersbergmedaillen og er siden 2022 modtager af Statens Kunstfonds livsvarige Hædersydelse.
Jesper Rasmussen, born 1959, is a Danish visual artist. Since the early 1980s he has worked with sculpture, installation, graphics, photography, publications and text. His artistic work often investigates how form creates atmosphere, identity and frameworks for behavior.
Most prominent is Jesper Rasmussen's work with installation and photography, which revolves around space, architecture and landscape. This has been reflected in sculptural tents, a drawing of a full-size cathedral, staircase sculptures, architectonics and scenographic installations that cannot be entered. Particularly significant is the digitally manipulated photographic representation of architecture and locations, where traces of human presence and activity in the form of traffic, doors, windows, etc. have been digitally removed, so that buildings and places appear with a strange and unheimlich atmosphere, and a parallel reality emerges that, despite the dehumanization, precisely points to the role and behavior of humans. Or digitally manipulated photographs of exhibition spaces in art museums, where the artwork has been retouched so that it is only perceived as shadows, reflections or visual traces in the image, and it appears as a kind of phantom or ghost art.
The sculptural work is mainly about transforming formalistic architectones into functional constructions, or about installing site-specific and building-integrated sculpture and architectural constructions that like to investigate the transition between aesthetics and function. Jesper Rasmussen is particularly interested in architectones and other formal structures, where it is difficult to determine whether they are sculptures in their own right or models of architecture on a different scale.
In the period 1986-91, Jesper Rasmussen was a co-founder and member of the artist group Solkorset, that experimented with collective work processes and carried out large, spectacular space installations.
Throughout his artistic career, Jesper Rasmussen has published and edited the art magazine Pist Protta together with Åse Eg Jørgensen and Jesper Fabricius since 1981. The magazine is considered an art project in its own right, where form, content, layout and expression are constantly experimented with. Jesper Rasmussen has also published a number of publications in the form of artist books, photo books, etc., and has built up a larger textual practice with artistic essays and polemical columns in his own publications, Pist Protta, and other magazines.
Jesper Rasmussen has had a long series of solo and group exhibitions in Denmark and abroad, and is represented in several Danish museums, including ARoS, Arken, Kunsten Aalborg, Den Nationale Fotosamling and Statens Museum for Kunst.
Jesper Rasmussen has been a member of the Academy Council at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen (2002-08), a member of the Danish Arts Foundation's Grants Committee (2008-10) and rector of the Jutland Art Academy (2007-15).
Jesper Rasmussen has received the Danish Arts Foundation's three-year scholarship, the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Scholarship, the Eckersberg Medal and has been a recipient of the Danish Arts Foundation's Lifetime Honorary Grant since 2022.
